The Skarsjö Trail runs around Lake Stora Skarsjön just east of Ljungskile on Bredfjället, one of the most fascinating upland areas in Bohuslän. The trail is demanding but offers a beautiful and varied hike, where the distance to the lake is rarely more than a stone’s throw.
Along the trail, there are several lovely spots to stop for a break or take a swim. The trail is well suited as a day hike or as a technical running trail.
The trail forms a loop of approximately 8.5 km and is marked with red signs. It is very hilly and passes through rocky terrain, which can make it feel challenging.
Length: Approx. 8.5 km + walk from the parking spot
Time: About 3–4 hours without breaks
Marking: Red trail markers
Difficulty: Moderate to difficult. The trail is very hilly with steep sections. Terrain includes forest paths, rock surfaces, and gravel.
Getting to the trail (about 10 min by car):
You can park either by Skarsjövallen football fields or at the trail center on Norra Fjället. It is also possible to walk from central Ljungskile via the coastal trail (Kuststigen), about 2.5 km, up to Lilla Skarsjön where you can easily connect to the trail.
If you are coming from Anfasteröd Gårdsvik, the nearest parking is at the Skarsjövallen sports field. From there, it’s a scenic walk to Skarsjön via Silverfallet waterfall and Muntra’s Cave, following the marked “Märta Trail.”
Directions to the Skarsjön trail from Skarsjövallen:
Once you arrive at Skarsjövallen, park by the tennis courts and follow a path from the gravel area past a few red houses and across a small stream. After about 100 meters, you will reach the Märta Trail. Continue straight ahead on this trail and take the “skorta Märta Trail” toward Silverfallet. A while after passing Silverfallet, at the northern end of Lilla Skarsjön, the trail turns sharply back west. Instead, continue straight ahead toward Stora Skarsjön and follow the trail around the lake.
