Night Kayaking and the bioluminescent “Mareld”
Welcome to us in September and experience kayaking in the dark, a campfire on the beach, and—hopefully—a sea sparkling with bioluminescence. This package includes kayak rental, a campfire kit, and accommodation with breakfast included!
We recommend starting your adventure by paddling out to one of the islands in Ljungskile Bay during the late afternoon sunshine. There, you can light a campfire, grill sausages, and enjoy freshly brewed campfire coffee as the sun sets. As darkness gradually falls, switch on your headlamps and paddle back through the night. We’ll recommend a safe route that stays close to the shoreline. From your kayak, you’ll have the chance to witness the sea sparkling with bioluminescence beneath your paddle. After returning to shore, you’ll spend the night in one of our hotel cabins or glamping tents, and the following morning we’ll serve you breakfast.
If you’d like to make your stay even more special, you can also book our wood-fired floating sauna for a swim in the glowing sea, or enjoy dinner in our restaurant.
If you don’t feel comfortable paddling on your own, it’s often possible to book a kayaking guide. Simply contact reception and we’ll be happy to check availability for you. If you prefer, you can also choose a rowing boat with an electric motor instead of a kayak.
What is Mareld?
Mareld, bioluminescence, is a natural phenomenon caused by microscopic plankton in seawater. When these organisms are disturbed—for example by waves or the movement of a kayak—they emit a brilliant turquoise-blue glow. Although the plankton are present throughout much of the summer, the nights around midsummer are usually too bright to see the glow clearly. September, however, is the perfect time to experience bioluminescence and night kayaking, as the sea remains warm while the nights become dark enough for the phenomenon to be visible. While we can’t guarantee you’ll see bioluminescence, we can confidently say that paddling through the peaceful darkness is an unforgettable experience in itself.
